The church is arranged today for a funeral. Burial records were sometimes noted in the parish registrar, which still survives. Today you will learn about death and burial customs and where burials took place. It was commonly believed (though not taught by the church) that souls suffering in purgatory would sometimes appear to the living to request prayers. There are many French-Canadian folk tales that tell of deceased loved one appearing to implore their relatives to help them.

The Catholic Church maintained a monopoly on blacksmithing in French Canada, using blacksmiths to generate revenue for church activities. The blacksmith thus worked for the Michilimackinac priest. By the mid-1760s this shop was one of several at Michilimackinac, and it was probably dismantled around 1765.

The blacksmith shop was excavated in 1967 and reconstructed in 1970. Today it is set up as the blacksmith shop would have looked with an interpretive panel inside.

Come in, gather ’round the fire, and learn about British Christmas traditions!

British holiday traditions followed the Anglican religious calendar. Celebrations theoretically centered around going to church but were also a very good reason to eat and party. Sweet treats such as cakes, cookies, puddings, sugared nuts and seeds all made it onto the table. Comfits are sugared seeds that were sometimes also called sugarplums, although they were not plums at all. There are many references throughout the late seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries which clearly define sugar-plums as large comfits. Many recipes called for the sugar to be colored with beet juice, spinach juice or saffron. Most were caraway comfits. Our version is made with fennel. Original images show them being eaten out of paper cones.

Storytelling was also a large part of holiday merrymaking and most of the stories were devoid of religious themes. They instead focused on secular topics, the supernatural (ghosts, goblins, etc.) or are quite unfit for children. Poetry was also popular during the holidays, just like it was during the rest of the year. In the spirit of one pamphlet The Christmas Frolick published by G. Allen, 1775:\nA Merry Christmas, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR\nWho’d fail to be merry that could be?\nWho’d wish to be dull in dull weather?\nLet us all be as happy as we should be\nAnd sing and tell stories together.

Jesuit missionaries built a small church on the shores of the Straits of Mackinac years before French soldiers built the nearby fort of Mchilimackinac. Although the church grew and expanded over the years, in 1743 carpenter Joseph Ainnse was hired to build a new parish church building after the mission was moved to L’arbre Croche. The new Church of Ste. Anne was a center of the French-Canadian community, serving the Catholic faithful even after the British arrived in 1761 and the Jesuits priests were recalled in 1765. The church was one of the first buildings moved to Mackinac Island in 1780. Although no longer housed in the 1743 church building, the parish of Ste. Anne’s remains active on Mackinac Island today.

Archaeologists excavated the church and adjacent cemetery in 1960. The church was reconstructed in 1964, and extensively renovated in 2010.

Home to Michilimackinac’s most powerful military officer, French troops likely built the Commanding Officer’s House in the mid-1750s. After the British took control of Michilimackinac in 1761, British officers lived in the house, which also featured a large garden and private privy. A major renovation in 1769-70 subdivided the house into four rooms on the ground floor, with two more in the attic. British soldiers moved the house to Mackinac Island in 1780-81, where they rebuilt it on the shoreline below Fort Mackinac. Renamed the Government House, the building continued to house British, and after 1796 American, officers. The house was finally demolished around 1820.

Archaeologists excavated the site of the Commanding Officer’s House in 1959-60. The house was rebuilt in 1963 and completely renovated in 2015-16.

Today, this multi-room exhibit showcases the life of Michilimackinac’s commanding officer, Captain Arent Depeyster, and his wife, Rebecca. Includes gallery spaces, period settings, and a large, beautiful garden. In addition to defending British interests in the upper Great Lakes, the DePeysters served as social leaders of Michilimackinac’s community.

French soldiers likely built this guardhouse soon after a fire destroyed an earlier guardhouse located near the Water Gate in 1751. Both the French and their British successors used the guardhouse as the center of their daily military activities. The guardhouse served as a headquarters and break room for the soldiers posted as guards around the fort. The building also served as a prison for unruly soldiers, who were confined in an underground “black hole.” The British moved the guardhouse to Fort Mackinac in 1780-81, but it was destroyed by fire in early 1783.

Archaeologists excavated the guardhouse in 1960, discovering features such as the hearth and the black hole. The building was rebuilt in 1978.

British soldiers built the King’s Storehouse in 1772-73, replacing an old, deteriorating structure. Like its predecessor, the new building housed government supplies and rations. Although the soldiers drew some items from the storehouse, most of these supplies were distributed to visiting Native Americans. Presenting these items in trade or as gifts helped British officers build diplomatic and military alliances with Native groups from around the Great Lakes. British soldiers moved the storehouse to Fort Mackinac in 1781. American troops later used the building as a barracks, the post hospital, a sutler’s store, and a workshop. It was finally torn down in 1827 to make way for a new post hospital.

Archaeologists excavated the storehouse twice: first, in its original location at Michilimackinac in 1959, and in its relocated position inside Fort Mackinac in 1981-82. It was rebuilt at Michilimackinac in 1961.

Today it is home to an orientation movie for the fort: Michilimackinac: Crossroads of the Great Lakes. The movie plays every 20 minutes, starting on the top of the hour.

Step into the Merchant’s House to learn the tradition of French Reveillon!

Réveillon is a French tradition of eating a night-time meal after the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. Large quantities of food would be served and many deserts. The coriander cakes are mentioned in a 1796 cookbook by Amelia Simmons as being “Christmas Cookies”

Therese Baird 1823, Mackinac Island: “On Christmas Eve, both sexes would read and sing, the service lasting till midnight. After this, a revillion (midnight treat) would be partaken by all.” “The affair was considered the high feast of the season, and no pains were spared to make the accompanying meal as good as the island afforded. The cooking was done at an open fire” and later: “We will begin with the roast pig, roast goose, chicken pie, round of beef, a la mode, pattes d’ours (bear’s paws, called so from the shape, made of chopped meat in a crust, corresponding to rissoles), sausage, head cheese, souse, small fruit preserves, small cakes.”

The British military maintained a series of latrines in the northwest corner of the fort. The final structure was probably built in 1775, after the existing latrine collapsed. It is unclear if soldiers moved the latrine to Mackinac Island or if the building was simply abandoned and destroyed in 1781.

Archaeologists excavated the latrines in 1968, discovering large numbers of artifacts discarded in the vaults. The latrine was rebuilt in 1983.

Today, exhibits help you learn about military hygiene in the 18th century.

Originally built by the French in the mid-1730s, the Northwest Rowhouse was either substantially renovated or completely rebuilt in the 1760s. The rowhouse consisted of five joined house units. Property records indicate that at various times some of the individual house units were either joined or further subdivided, creating new apartments within the building as the units passed between owners. Although it is largely unclear who lived in the individual house units, archaeological evidence indicates that British merchants, who were some of Michilimackinac’s wealthier residents, lived in the rowhouse, enjoying imported ceramics, glassware, and furniture.

Archaeologists partially excavated the Northwest Rowhouse in 1961. Two house units were reconstructed in 1965, with a third added in 1977-78. The two other house units remain undisturbed as an archaeological preserve.

The Northwest Rowhouse is home to our largest exhibit, Treasures from the Sand, as well as period settings set up as British Trader’s Houses.

Treasures from the Sand explores the historical archaeological process, and is home to hundreds of artifacts unearthed at Colonial Michilimackinac. This exhibit is located down a flight of stairs, with an accessible program available inside the British Trader’s House.

The British Trader’s Houses were most likely lived in during the summer months, and today often have an interpreter inside providing formal and informal programs.

Will you find the bean and be King for the day?

Christmas for the French tended to be a solemn occasion. The focus was on baby Jesus and going to Midnight Mass. Christmas Day was meant for devotion and the season of Advent was observed as a period of prayer and fasting. The word advent means coming and referred to the coming of Jesus on Christmas Day.

It was the New Year throughout France and New France that marked the beginning of a period of celebration from 1 January until Ash Wednesday.

The Feast of Kings, celebrated on January 6th (also called Three Kings’ Day or Epiphany) commemorates the day the wise men came to visit Jesus and celebrates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ himself. The King’s Cake was used to commemorate the arrival of the Three Kings in Bethlehem. The tradition is that a person who finds the bean in the cake becomes king or queen for the day and wears a paper crown.

Originally built in the 1740s, the powder magazine was one of Michilimackinac’s most important buildings. French builders constructed the magazine partially underground in an attempt to minimize damage to the surrounding community in the event of an explosion. Capable of storing tons of gunpowder, the magazine was privately owned during the French period. The British took control of the magazine and made several improvements, including the addition of a plank floor, after they arrived in 1761. Since the underground structure was impossible to move to Mackinac Island, British troops purposefully burned the empty magazine in 1781.

Archaeologists excavated the magazine in 1974-75. They discovered that during the fire, the earth-covered roof had collapsed, smothering the flames and preserving large portions of the wooden structure of the magazine.

Today, the Powder Magazine is the most preserved ruins at Michilimackinac. It is located down a flight of stairs from the South Southeast Rowhouse. An accessible version of this exhibit is available inside the South Southeast Rowhouse.

To provide a home for the Jesuit missionaries serving the new Church of Ste. Anne, French carpenters probably built the priest’s house sometime in the mid-1740s. The house was connected to the church. Even after the Jesuits priests were recalled in 1765, the Michilimackinac congregation maintained the house in hopes of attracting a new priest. The house served as a temporary home for Fr. Pierre Gibault, who visited Michilimackinac in 1768 and 1775. The priest’s house was moved to Mackinac Island in 1780-81.

The priest’s house was excavated in 1967 and reconstructed in 1970. Today it is set up as a period setting.

Beginning in 1715, when the French built the fort, enlisted soldiers lived in rented homes rather than official quarters. British officers complained about this situation when they arrived at Michilimackinac in 1761, and in 1769 carpenters finally arrived to build a formal barracks for the British garrison. When complete, the log barracks contained four rooms, each of which contained a fireplace and housed 12 to 16 men. Soldiers slept, cooked, ate, and relaxed in their barracks rooms. The British moved the barracks to Fort Mackinac in 1780-81. Although in increasingly poor condition, the British and later the Americans used the building until 1828, when it was demolished to make way for a new barracks.

Archaeologists excavated the barracks in 1959, and it was one of the first buildings reconstructed in 1960.

Featuring the Redcoats on the Frontier exhibit. British soldiers marched into Michilimackinac in the fall of 1761 following victory over French and Indian forces in the Seven Years War. This exhibit explores who the soldiers were who lived here, thousands of miles from home, in a multi-room exhibit.

Like many of the buildings inside Michilimackinac, French carpenters built the Southeast Rowhouse in the mid-1730s, during the fort’s first major expansion. The building was either extensively renovated or entirely rebuilt in the 1760s. Originally a six-unit rowhouse, the two eastern houses were combined to form a single, larger house. In the 1760s and 1770s, British officers lived in this larger eastern unit, while German trader Ezekiel Solomon owned the house next door. Unlike many of the fort’s other buildings, the rowhouse was not moved to Mackinac Island. The building was demolished and burned around 1781.

Archaeologists excavated various parts of the building between 1976 and 1997, and returned to the site beginning in 2007. The two eastern units were reconstructed in 1989.

Solomon, Michigan’s first Jewish settler, probably used this house as a summer residence, returning to Montreal in the winter. Here, Solomon inspected, sorted, and packed trade goods, and furs, with his house doubling as office and warehouse.

Lieutenant George Clowes, of the 8th Regiment of Foot, most likely lived in the other unit in the mid-1770s. Clowes was a senior subaltern to post commander Arent DePeyster.

French carpenters likely built the original South Southeast Rowhouse in the mid-1730s, during one of Michilimackinac’s first major expansions. Originally containing four house units, the rowhouse was rebuilt in the 1760s after the British took control of the fort. French traders and British soldiers lived in the houses after 1761. In 1775, Captain Arent DePeyster reported that he had “removed an old house bordering too near upon the powder magazine,” almost certainly referring to the easternmost house unit. After this house was demolished, the other three units remained until Michilimackinac was moved to Mackinac Island between 1779 and 1781.

Archaeologists excavated portions of the rowhouse and the surrounding yards between 1976 and 1979. The easternmost house unit was rebuilt in 1985-86.

Coming Together at the Straits: The People of Michilimackinac, showcasing how the thriving community of Michilimackinac drew people from diverse cultures - many in search of wealth or to protect the British empire. Others had little choice, coming as slaves.

The Powder Magazine is the most complete ruin at Michilimackinac.

Like Michilimackinac’s other rowhouses, the South Southwest Rowhouse was originally built in the mid-1730s. The building contained six house units, and was either extensively remodeled or completely rebuilt in the 1760s. During the British period, a mixture of British soldiers and French and British traders lived in the rowhouse.

Archaeologists excavated the majority of this large building between 1963 and 1969. They returned to the site beginning in 1998, using refined excavation techniques and an improved understanding of the society and material culture of Michilimackinac in the 18th century to finish investigating the building. The rowhouse was rebuilt in 2012-13.

Today it is home to the multi-room France at Mackinac, 1670-1760 exhibit, the Hearthside Museum Store, restrooms, and a drinking fountain.

French carpenters likely constructed the original Southwest Rowhouse in the 1730s. Some of the community’s most prominent residents, such as the fort’s commanding officer, lived in this six-unit building during the French period. Sometime between 1755 and 1760, the aging rowhouse was torn down and replaced with an identical structure. After the British arrived in 1761, Capt. William Howard tore down the old French officer’s house to create a garden for his troops. Inhabited by British soldiers, French and British merchants, and families, the rest of the rowhouse remained until the community of Michilimackinac moved to Mackinac Island around 1780.

The Southwest Rowhouse was excavated between 1962 and 1964. Three of the five house units which remained in the 1770s were reconstructed in 1968. A fourth unit was added in 2024.

Today, the Southwest Rowhouse is home to the Merchant’s House, Soldier’s House, Attack! at Michilimackinac movie, and our newest exhibit, Slavery at the Straits.

Slavery at the Straits shows how, throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, slavery was an integral part of the community at Michilimackinac and in Michigan.

Attack! at Michilimackinac presents a movie of the most dramatic event in the fort’s history.

The Merchant’s and Soldier’s Houses are set up as period settings, and interpretive staff provide formal and informal interpretation within both throughout the day.

The Southwest Rowhouse may not be accessible to some wheelchairs and scooters, as doors are only 29.5” wide.

The Church of Ste. Anne de Michilimackinac is set as it would be for Christmas Mass in the 17th century. Here you will learn of the first recorded Christmas at Mackinac.

During the winter of 1679, Fr. Jean Enjalran supervised the Jesuit mission of St Ignace. Originally intended to serve a group of refugee Huron people brought to Mackinac by Fr. Jacques Marquette, the mission also served converts among the local Odawa. Combined with ministering to a French trading settlement that sprang up soon after the mission’s founding in 1671, Fr. Enjalran spent much of his time preaching to Native converts and instructing them in the Catholic faith. There were so many Odawa people living near the St. Ignace mission that the Jesuits eventually set up a smaller church, dedicated to St. Francis de Borgia, to specifically minister in their communities.

During one of the Christmas processions the Huron carried a banner depicting the Holy House of Loreto, which some believe was the house that Joseph, Mary, and Jesus lived in while Christ was a child. The remains of the house are now enshrined in the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto, Italy. This image may have been chosen thanks to the Huron’s familiarity with Fr. Pierre-Joseph-Marie Chaumonot, another Jesuit who worked extensively with the tribe in New France and who felt a special connection with the Holy House after visiting multiple times before sailing for Canada.

During the Christmas season, Fr. Enjalran supervised an elaborate series of services, processions, and feasts to mark the birth of Christ. In preparation, the Huron converts built a grotto in the mission church, complete with a cradle and a statue of the infant Jesus. After Fr. Enjalran conducted a midnight mass on Christmas, the Hurons and some of the Odawa asked that the priest bring the statue to their villages. Instead of simply moving the statue, the Hurons planned an elaborate procession for Epiphany, recreating the visit of the Magi to the infant Christ. The Hurons, including those who were not converts, split into three large groups, each with a tribal leader wearing a crown and carrying a scepter to represent the three kings and accompanied by the sounds of trumpets. Proceeded by a banner carried on standard depicting a star on a sky-blue field, the three groups marched to the church, where they presented gifts to at the grotto and prayed. Fr. Enjalran then wrapped the statue in a fine linen cloth, and followed the procession, this time led by two Frenchmen carrying a banner depicting Mary and Jesus, to the Huron village. Once there, all of the Hurons, including those who had not converted to Christianity, participated in a dance and feast. A week later Fr. Enjalran supervised a similar procession, with the Huron this time visiting the Odawa community for another feast. Houses were decorated during the 18th century to make them more festive. Most decorations were made out of natural materials. Garlands were the most popular and were made of evergreens like ivy, holly, and mistletoe to symbolize life. People also used flowers and herbs of all types – lavender, rose, rosemary. It was also common to see sprigs, or swags of greenery used in windows or above fireplaces. Balls of mistletoe might be hung for couples to kiss under. It was not common to see trees inside the home as decoration.

Some people thought that it was bad luck to decorate before Christmas Eve. Once Twelfth Night (January 6) was over, most decorations were taken down. Some said that it was to prevent bad luck to leave them up too long.
